dont like this at all
I cannot get a connection. Day after day after day, my connection is constantly going out. Today it took me 20 minutes of unplugging, turning off, re-pluggin, re-turning on, waiting, waiting, and more waiting to FINALLY get a connection. This is rediculous!!!!!
Great router for home
This router is great for personal home use. Both the wired and wireless connections are awesome. I do all kinds of streaming both to and from my house and this thing performs better than expected. That said, I came across one flaw. The router supports dual band wireless (i.e. N and A,B,G at the same time) but... when you enable them both the wireless performance drops significantly. The signal strength drops to the point where you almost have to be in the same room. For this reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. If you want to use this router with both 2.4 and 5 Ghz and a re worried about wireless distance I would look somewhere else. However, since 2.4 Ghz supports B, G, and N this was not an issue for me. I run a pretty complexed network at home and suprised that this router keeps up.
Unable to see all my machines through E3000!!!!! Frustrated....
This is the response I get from CISCO online help!
from Mrinmoy (70934) to All Participants:
Well WB , we do not support this file sharing configuration as this is completely depend on the operating system on the network .Please contact your computer vendor they will help you with it . I explained all the below to her.
I have a Win 7 desktop, Win XP SP3 desktop, and a HP Officejet Pro A910N (Win 7, E3000 secure link) hooked directly to the E3000.
I have two other Win XP SP3 desktops and a HP 8500 Pro A909g (Win XP / 7)printer hooked to the E3000 through an Netgear switch.
I can print to any printer from any machine. But, from my XP machines I can not see any XP or Win 7 machines or printer. I can not even see the E3000.
From my Win 7 machine I can see only the A910 and the Win7 desktop itself and the E3000.
Why can I not fileshare? This sucks! When I first got the E3000 up I could see everything. Now, only Win 7 stuff.
Linksys E3000
To all users of the Linksys E3000, this router is one of the best routers money can buy. I have used them to set up wireless links at distantses of over 3000 feet. The trick is the firmware, update the firmware and unlock the power of a router that cost 10 times the price of the E4200. When you bye a router don't just rely on it to set itself up. Know what your doing and what your buying, when you do, you'll quit being sorry for spending a little more money for a very good product.
Think TWICE Before You Buy!!!
This Router Gives Too Much Problems Specially for how Expensive it is.
My network consist of 2 laptops, an xbox 360, a PS3, a 46"Sony LED HDTV w/ wireless connectivity, and Samsung Blu-ray player also w/ the same.
Well, long story short, I can never use none of this appliance at the same time, because the router will ALWAYS drop the connection NON-STOP until I shut one of them off or disconnect them from the router. This is the most disappointing and/or annoying router I've had.
I always go for the best, so that I can get the best and save myself the huge amounts of headaches and anger that this router has caused me. I have the best DSL plan from my internet company, so I don't know if this just too much for their "top of the line" router at the time, but I don't think that's the case because when I use it w/ my laptop or xbox only, then 9 out 10 times it works great, but as soon as the 2nd appliance is turned on, then 20 out of 10 times it's just a matter of ends or minutes b4 it starts dropping the connection NON-STOP.The problem is my router and not my modem, because as soon as the router drops the connection to all my devices, I unplug the cable that goes from my modem to my router and connect it directly to either my laptop or xbox and both keep working just fine, if not better than before.
SO AGAIN, THINK Twice B4 you buy.
The good, the bad and the really ugly of E3000 router
I purchase the router about a year ago and must contact Cisco tech support to get it set up. I thought setting a router would be no brainer after I have been working in IT for over 15 years but I was wrong. It was not as easy as it should be. However, once you know the little tricks it requires, setting or resetting it is very simple especially with the application can be saved onto a flash drive.
I don't know if any one has the same issue but I could never get the guest network set up even with the tech support from Cisco. I refused to pay for some thing that I don't need to have. Also, it should be part of the "package" as advertised on the package but we don't always get.
I could not set up printer or file sharing either. Perhaps the unit I got only route the signal for internet access and does not thing else. After about 8 months, it start to drop internet access for the unit got very hot. I kept having to turn it off until it cool down before I can reboot it. Other alternative is putting it in an AC room or sit it right next to a fan. Pretty mucth the unit is only good for less than a year and I now am shopping for another router. I hope that I would not have to purchase another Cicso router for it does not do all of the things that indicated on the package.
E3000 + TomatoUSB = happieness
When I got my E3000, I noticed that the Web-UI was not much improved over I'd seen on my earlier generation Linksys routers. The stock, OOB configuration works, but is a couple beers short of a six-pack. First, as mentioned in other reviews, any change you make in the Web-UI will blow the easy setup stuff out of the water. Second, the stock logging is brain dead, not useful at all. Stock, I'd rate the E3000 as 3 of 5 stars.
When I finally got tired of waiting for Cisco to upgrade the firmware on the E3000, I went looking to see if Tomato would run on it, since I use Tomato on my WRT54Gv4 router, and it is fantastic. The firmware is at TomatoUSB.org.
I finally found TomatoUSB, which takes Tomato as its base and adds all kinds of goodies. It has QOS, USB 1.1 to 2.0 support, with support for FAT32, NTFS and Ext2 & Ext3 file systems. It also supports Samba, FTP, User permissions, *and* printing.
The media serving is good, from what I can tell. My son has not complained about his Xbox 360 on the E3000 as he did with lesser routers. The TomatoUSB developers are beginning to add in IPv6 support, but like lots of routers, this is a work in progress.
The Tomato community has turned an okay router into a superstar from where I see it.
USB external hard drive
Overall, this router is tops. My only problem is the USB external hard drive connection. Every couple of days, the router loses connectity with the external hard drive. I need to reboot the router to gain connectivity for mapped drives. Any suggestions?
E3000
Frustrated as hell.
Replaced my old WRT54G that worked fine for years except for the X-Box 360. With the E3000, X-Box 360 works flawlessly. Nothing else does.
My Dell and HP laptops will not connect regardless of hoops and backflips with settings or using the quick-fix USB setup utility. All of my wired ethernet devices get super internet access but no networking or sharing: need to manually transfer files on USB and then to the computer in the back room where the printers are.
So, the network of three Ethernet Wired computers, three printers and two laptops is useless. But the X-Box works great!
Several days of screwing around, no solutions offered, just endless circles. No ethernet LAN help from Cisco. No help from MicroSoft. Local network is hosed.
Will try to install a regular ethernet hub to get network going again and try the E3000 as an add-on device.
Will probably send it back for refund, try something else.
E3000 is a solid WIFI router
I recently purchased the Linksys/Cisco E2000 from a local Best Buy. As soon as I got home I clicked around the router's web interface (no need for the CD to set it up). Despite the router's newer looks/design, the web interface is identical to the older Linksys routers. After reading many positive reviews about DD-WRT and Tomato firmware I decided to try Tomato USB on the E2000. This firmware breathes new life into this router. I then proceeded to exchange my E2000 for an E3000 (to gain dual-band simultaneous WIFI and a USB port for NAS functionality). I put Tomato USB on the E3000 and it works as expected. Very functional router, WIFI range is very good too. Very happy with the bandwidth graphing, easy QOS setup. In addition (by default) the Linksys E3000's USB port can only be used for a USB hard drive (NAS). After installing Tomato firmware on it you can use a USB printer (not that I have a need to, but I am sure many people would like to convert their USB printer to a network printer). I did connect an old USB 1.0 hard drive to the E3000's USB port to test the NAS functionality. It worked perfectly 1st attempt. Was able to browse to it via Windows networking (Samba for linux nerds). Windows and Mac computers were able to mount the shared hard drive and both were able to read/write to it.
The only downfall of the E2000/E3000 is lack of external antennas. I did some searching and found that someone on eBay is selling an "E2000 E3000 antenna modification kit" which gives you external antennas and the internal cabling. This does indeed look like an easy modification (to give external antennas to the E2000/E3000 requires soldering 1-2 wires and drilling a small hole in back of router's plastic case for antenna mounting. Right now my WIFI range w/ the E3000 is more than adequate but I may try to do the antenna upgrade just to do it (why not!).
All in all if you are looking for a highly functional router and do not care about dual-band simultaneous WIFI, I would recommend the E2000 (for the price... $65 on New Egg). The E3000 gives you dual-band simultaneous WIFI and the USB port (and CPU is a tad faster) but you do end up paying more for it (E3000 on New Egg right now is $129).
This is the WORST adapter.
This is the WORST adapter. It has a built in incompatibility with many computers, yet this fact is not published.
I was advised by linksys to update my adapter to the E series after describing my household and the types of computers we have. I discovered that any computer with the atheros wireless driver was INCOMPATIBLE with this E3000 system. It was too bad for me that I had already purchased this $150 linksys router, and now have no recourse, except to buy another router. I was offered that for another $60 (plus shipping), Cisco would send me an external wireless card for my laptop, but that doesn't solve the problem of other laptops who may need to use this wireless system at the same time. This E series totally doesn't suit my needs, and I am out $150. I believe the manufacturer should have made good and replaced it with a router that would have worked for the multiple laptops we have in our home.
What makes matters worse is that Cisco had known about this incompatibility issue, yet they did not disclose it.
To add to my review below: *
To add to my review below:
* The 5GHz provided a weaker signal then the 2.4GHz.
* The USB feature which I attached my ext. HD to, is intermittent AT BEST.
I have been in touch with the terrible tech support and they have no plans to fix the Cisco Connect problem
What they DON'T or WON'T tell you
If you use this router OOB (out of box) then it's an 'OK' unit.
The software (Cisco Connect) that provides access to Parental Controls and Scheduling are 'OK'
but they still haven't fixed the schedule/scheduling.
If scheduling is an important feature to you, then this product is NOT FOR YOU.
Once you move into the advanced features of this router you can kiss parental controls and
scheduling good-bye. It ceases to stop working. This is a known problem with Cisco/Linksys and
here is there recommendation, 'Reset your router to default'
It's like they gave the Cisco Connect to one team and the advanced features to another and they never talked during developement.
Hey Cisco/Linksys. Thanks for dropping the ball yet again on this steaming pile.
I WILL be returning it.
DONT BUY IT
Wireless Connection DROPS in speed and requires reboot constantly. Tech Support is worthless and in order to even make it work at its advertised speed you have to sacrifice settings id rather not sacrifice... went back to my old router and this is the last time i buy a linksys product after they want to charge $49 per hour to change settings that end up not working anyways. I have been a linksys user for many Years what a disappointed. Wish i could return mine to get a refund. Search the Internet for E3000 Wireless speed and you will see DONT BUY IT
Best move I've made
I've seen a lot of talk about the set-up cd that came with the E3000 router being worthless. Truth be told I had not one problem setting this router up with the CD. It worked like a charm. Beats trying to find the default code by searching. I recently upgraded from a linksys wrt150-n. The range of my old one was minimal. I constantly had to reset it due to the router failing to put out signal and so on. The E3000 has been amazing. My laptop and PS3 all connect like a charm with a signal strength of 100% and the router is at opposite ends of my house than my computer and PS3. Awesome range and lightning fast speeds. I would definitely buy this one again. If you like great connectivity, fast connections whether for internet browsing or online gaming, this is definitely the one for you. A+
in addition to other linksys
in addition to other linksys e3000 reviews , i would like to say that the router lack of enough documentation (at least for newbie user).

linksys e3000 review:
Pros: Fast broadcasting. Highly recommended for fast internet connection. good range , I have many walls blocking me from the router and i still have full wireless bars.
Cons: The included setup disk software with linksys e3000 support Windows only, but the installation can be done manually if you can find the default password in the very limited documentation..
Bottom Line: linksys e3000 will meet your needs for sure. I stream HD movies without lag with this dual band router, play games, talk on skype...
